How Do You Prevent Scratches During Sheet Metal Assembly? Practical Solutions from a Real Riveting Case

This article explains how to prevent scratches during sheet metal assembly by controlling surface contact, keeping work areas clean, protecting cosmetic surfaces, and improving alignment. A real riveting case shows how a plastic spacer washer protected moving powder-coated panels, while an adhesive backing kept the washer aligned and made blind riveting faster.

Does Dark Gray Anodizing Prevent Color Variation? Lessons From a Real CNC Project

Eight CNC-machined 5082 aluminum parts developed visible shade differences after being dark gray anodized in the same batch. Selectively stripping and re-anodizing some parts did not reproduce the original color. This case shows why dark gray cannot guarantee uniformity and why material consistency, controlled surface preparation, physical color samples, and careful rework decisions matter.

Does an Ra 0.4 Surface Finish Require Polishing?

An Ra 0.4 surface finish does not automatically require polishing. Diamond-tool machining can achieve Ra ≤ 0.4 μm directly, although fine, uniform tool marks may remain visible. If the drawing specifies roughness only and inspection confirms compliance, keeping the surface as machined helps preserve flatness and tight tolerances while reducing cost. Polishing should be treated as a separate operation only when a mirror-like or tool-mark-free appearance is also required.

Should You Install Thread Inserts After Surface Treatment?

In several projects for Israeli customers, aluminum CNC machining is outsourced to China, while precision grinding and tightly controlled finishing remain local. The local process may involve qualification, inspection, or proprietary requirements that are not fully disclosed to the machine shop. In this situation, installing thread inserts after surface treatment is often the most controlled […]

Sheet Metal Press Fit: Why Stamped Holes Can’t Do It and Our 4-Step Solution

Stamped holes in sheet metal typically hold ±0.1–0.5 mm tolerance, while machined studs are held to ±0.01–0.05 mm — a mismatch that makes direct press fit unreliable in production. This article covers a proven 4-step solution: stamp the hole 0.1–0.2 mm undersize, CNC finish it to final diameter, turn a lead-in chamfer and 0.05 mm locating shoulder on the stud, and press on a servo press with force-displacement monitoring. It also covers hardness differential requirements, interference fit selection, minimum sheet thickness, and when to use this method versus standard PEM self-clinching fasteners.

Sheet Metal Powder Coating Defects: Why 200 Braille Parts Had a 30% First-Pass Yield

Sheet metal powder coating is often treated as the final, routine step in fabrication. It becomes much less predictable when a part combines a demanding cosmetic finish with raised features that must remain functional after coating. That was the challenge on a batch of 200 SGCC zinc-coated steel parts. Each part required a smooth gloss […]
